helping communities help themselves

Sport & Play for All Project

Community groups play an important role in addressing health and well being and ensuring the whole community have access to community facilities.  It is essential that communities ensure both that local facilities are physically accessible and that local services and activities are aimed at and involve all members of the community.

Park2

Research undertaken in 2005 by Devon Playing Fields Association identified that local sport and play facilities were not addressing the needs of key groups within the communities - teenagers, older people and people with disabilities.  One of the key recommendations coming out of CCD’s successful Access and Awareness project for community buildings therefore, was the need for access awareness training and support for those managing playing fields, amateur sports clubs and similar facilities.

Key aims of the Project:

To Support volunteers from local Playing Fields Associations and Parish councils  across Devon, with the skills and understanding to improve access to sport & play facilities for all.

The project will aim also to address the wider issues of inclusion, by promoting better access to community sport and play facilities and increased participation on management committees by previously under-represented user groups: people with disabilities, older people and young people.

The project to date has delivered five introductory workshops to communities, with seven groups being offered a package of follow-up support including face to face visits to develop audits and action plans.
