Inclusive Communities

At the Community Council of Devon we believe that we all benefit from the various diverse communities who live, study and work in rural Devon. Devon is home to black and minority ethnic communities, to men and women of all ages, to children and disabled people. Many faiths are represented across Devon, some of us are lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans and some of us experience significant rural poverty. There is, in fact, far greater diversity in Devon than is recognized. For example it is now estimated that 6% of Devon’s population have a first language other than English (Community Safety Mapping Project 2010).

We are aware that there are members of many groups in Devon who may have real difficulties in accessing services and contributing to their communities, In some cases they can be targets of prejudice and discrimination. We are therefore committed to taking positive steps to challenge this disadvantage and to ensuring Devon is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all its residents.

Our Social Inclusion team work closely with all of the Community Council of Devon’s teams to ensure a commitment to inclusivity is at the heart of all our work. We work strategically with outside statutory and voluntary agencies to influence future policies and planning and are happy to provide advice and support to Community Council of Devon members.
